Story by Wes Merriott

Watch out, football isn’t just for the boys anymore. South Bossier is proudly introducing its first all-girl flag football team—the Black Widows. Comprised entirely of 7th and 8th-grade girls from Elm Grove Middle School, these young athletes are blazing a trail in a sport that’s rapidly growing in popularity and is soon expected to be part of high school athletics.

What started as a simple experiment quickly grew after nearly 30 enthusiastic young ladies showed up for tryouts. Clearly, the demand for a new and exciting outlet was there. The girls, already classmates, saw this as a fantastic opportunity to bond, hang out more, and challenge themselves in a sport that’s as competitive as it is fun.

Led by Head Coach Nekia Yeglic, with assistance from Coach Latorya Green, Coach Kurvis Sharp, Coach Adam Green, the Black Widows are truly a community affair. All coaches have strong local ties—many are parents of athletes attending Parkway High School, further strengthening the sense of community.

The Black Widows compete in the “A League,” a developmental division aimed at honing fundamentals such as hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and strategic thinking. Though flag football differs from tackle and 7-on-7 formats, the core values remain the same: effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Watching these young ladies practice is both inspiring and entertaining. Their energy and enthusiasm often spill into playful accidents like accidental tackles, which become moments of joy and laughter for everyone involved.

The South Bossier Black Widows, proudly presented by the All day Boyz 7-on-7 team, aren’t just playing flag football—they’re pioneering the sport for girls across the area. As flag football continues to rise, these athletes will undoubtedly inspire many others to join the movement.

Come out sometime, meet the team, and witness firsthand the excitement and dedication these young ladies bring to every game and practice. South Bossier, say hello to your very own Black Widows!
